Crypto Gambling Regulation 2026: UK Weighs Licensed Crypto Payments
The UK Gambling Commission is actively exploring whether to allow cryptocurrencies as a payment method for licensed gambling operators. The move, announced in early 2026, reflects both growing demand from consumers and pressure from the illegal market.
Why the UK Is Looking at Crypto
Executive Director Tim Miller has said the commission’s Industry Forum is tasked with evaluating how crypto could be integrated in a way that still meets licensing objectives and consumer protection standards. Two main drivers are behind the review:
- Consumer demand — Searches for cryptocurrency payment options are among the top channels leading British gamblers toward unlicensed sites. Offering a regulated crypto option could help keep more activity within the legal market.
- Crypto regulatory framework — The UK’s new crypto rules are taking shape. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is expected to finalise the framework in March 2026, with full implementation targeted for October 2027. Licence applications are expected to open in September 2026.
Allowing crypto payments for licensed operators would not mean that unlicensed “crypto casinos” are regulated; those would still be expected to fail customer suitability and other checks.
The Illegal Market Context
Research cited by the commission suggests that illegal gambling still accounts for a significant share of the market — around 9% in the UK and much higher in parts of Europe. Crypto is one of the main search terms that lead users to unlicensed sites. Bringing crypto into the licensed space, under strict checks, could therefore support both consumer choice and harm reduction.
What Happens Next
No specific deadline has been set for the Gambling Commission’s evaluation. Any move to permit crypto would need to align with anti-money laundering rules, age and identity verification, and responsible gambling measures. For now, the UK is taking a cautious, evidence-based approach to see whether and how crypto can fit into the regulated landscape.
